How to Say “I Miss You” in Moroccan Darija? Twaheshtak (توحشتك) Explained
When I first moved from Morocco to Italy 2 years ago, the first Darija word my mom taught me to say on the phone was not “hello” or “how are you”. It was “Twaheshtak”.
Because honestly, when you are far from someone you love, “I miss you” is the most important thing to know how to say.
If you are learning Moroccan Darija for your partner, friend, or family… trust me, saying Twaheshtak is 10 times more powerful than saying it in English. Moroccans get so emotional when a foreigner tries to speak Darija.
What Does Twaheshtak Mean Exactly?
Twaheshtak (توحشتك) literally means “I missed you” but we use it for “I miss you” too. It’s the same.
In classical Arabic it’s “Ishtaqtu ilayk” but nobody in Morocco says that. In the street, in Casa, Rabat, Marrakech, everyone says Twaheshtak.
The root is from “Wahsha” which means the feeling of emptiness when someone is not there. So it’s a very deep word.
Pronunciation – Very Important!
Okay this is where most tourists fail, so listen carefully. The pronunciation changes a little bit if you are a man or a woman speaking.
- If YOU are a man: Say Twa-hesh-TAK. The end is strong, TAK. Like “tack”.
Example: Ana weld, kangoul TwaheshtAK. - If YOU are a girl/woman: Say Twa-hesh-TEK. The end is soft, TEK.
Example: Ana bent, kangoul TwaheshTEK.
And who are you talking to also changes it, but don’t overcomplicate it at the beginning. Just remember TAK for guys speaking and TEK for girls speaking. Moroccans will understand you anyway and they will love that you tried.
Tip: The “7” in Twa7eshtak is the letter ح. It’s like a strong H from your throat. Try to say “h” like you are cleaning your glasses. Twa-HH-eshtak.
How To Use Twaheshtak in Real Life? 5 Examples
Don’t just say the word alone, it’s a bit cold. Moroccans always add something. Here are real sentences I use with my family:
1. For a friend:
“Twaheshtak a sahbi, fin ghberti?”
= I miss you my friend, where did you disappear? Perfect for a friend you didn’t see for a long time.
2. For your boyfriend (if you are a girl):
“Twaheshtek bzzaf a hbibi”
= I miss you so much my love. Bzzaf = so much / a lot. This one is very romantic.
3. For your girlfriend (if you are a guy):
“Twaheshtak bzzaf a hbibti”
= Same but for a girl. Hbibti = my love (for female).
4. For your family or many people:
“Twaheshkom kamlin”
= I miss you all. If you miss your Moroccan family.
5. The strongest one:
“Twaheshtak, ma nqdersh bla bik”
= I miss you, I can’t live without you. Use this carefully haha, it’s very strong.
What To Answer When Someone Says Twaheshtak To You?
If a Moroccan tells you Twaheshtak, don’t just say “me too” in English. Answer in Darija, they will smile for the whole day.
Say: “Hta ana twaheshtek / twaheshtak”
حتى أنا توحشتك
= Me too, I missed you.
Or you can say “Lah yhafdek, hta ana” = God bless you, me too. Very Moroccan and respectful.
Twaheshtak vs Kanbghik – Don’t Confuse Them!
Okay I get this question a lot on my Instagram. People mix them.
It’s very simple:
- Kanbghik (كانبغيك) = I love you. It’s about LOVE. It’s a feeling in your heart.
- Twaheshtak (توحشتك) = I miss you. It’s about ABSENCE. When someone is not near you.
But you know what is the most beautiful thing you can say? Combine them. My wife cried when I told her this for the first time:
“Twaheshtak, kanbghik bzzaf!”
= I miss you, I love you so much!
If you learn only one sentence from this whole website, learn this one. Wallah it’s worth it.
Final Tip From Me
Don’t be shy to make mistakes. My Italian friends say “Tawahechtak” with a wrong accent and my mom still loves it. The effort is what matters.
Record yourself saying it and send it as a voice message. It’s much more personal than a text.
If you want to learn the other important love word, check my other guide about how to say I love you – Kanbghik – with pronunciation. I explained there the difference between saying it to a man and a woman too.
Shokran bzzaf for reading, and I hope you get to say Twaheshtak to someone you love very soon.
