Let me tell you about the most embarrassing moment of my first week in Marrakech.
I’m in the middle of the souk, it’s 40 degrees, I’m sweating, and a super nice old man is pulling me into his shop. I panic. I keep saying “No no no no, sorry sorry” in English and almost running.
He looked at me… and he was offended. I felt like a terrible tourist.
Later, my Moroccan friend Hassan told me: “Yassin, you said NO wrong. In Morocco, we never say no directly. We say it with a smile and with Allah.”
That one sentence changed everything for my business and my life here.
So today, I’m not giving you a dictionary lesson. I’m giving you the 4 sentences that made me go from “annoying tourist” to “ah, you’re like a local!”
1. The Smile & Escape: “La, shukran. Ghir kan-shoof.”
💬 La, shukran. Ghir kan-shoof.
📝 لَا، شُكْرًا. غِيرْ كَانْشُوفْ
This is your 90% weapon. It means “No thanks, my eyes are just having a walk.” Say it, smile, hand on your heart, and keep walking SLOWLY. Don’t run. When you run, they chase. When you smile, they let you go.
2. The Polite Ghost: “Inshallah, men ba3d.”
💬 Inshallah, men ba3d.
📝 إِنْشَاءَ الله، مِنْ بَعْدْ
My FAVORITE. It means “If God wants, later.” It’s magic. You’re not saying no. You’re saying “maybe in another life, my friend.” No one can argue with God. They will smile and say “Inshallah!” back.
3. The Broke Tourist Trick: “Ghali bezaf 3liya.”
💬 Ghali bezaf 3liya.
📝 غَالِي بْزَّافْ عَلِيَّا
Don’t say it angry. Say it sad. Like you REALLY want it but your wallet is crying. Look at the scarf, touch it, and say “Ghali bezaf 3liya a khouya”. 8 times out of 10 he will say: “Okay, how much you want to pay?” THAT’S when the real price starts. Not before.
4. The Respectful Goodbye: “Baraka, Allah y3awnek.”
💬 Baraka, Allah y3awnek.
📝 بَارَاكَا، الله يْعَاوْنَكْ
This is how we end it. It means “May God help you in your work.” It’s so full of respect that the seller can’t follow you. It’s impossible. You gave him a blessing. Try it. You’ll feel the power.
MY SECRET WEAPON FOR THE SOUK
I put 100 phrases like these (with voice notes of how I really say them in the street) inside one small Bible.
Because reading Darija is useless if you don’t hear the tone. The tone is everything.
📚 Get My Darija Bible – $9.99⚡️ Instant download – Use it in the souk in 2 minutes
Listen — the souk is not a scam. It’s theater. And for 2 years, I was watching it from the outside. The day I learned these 4 lines, I got invited for tea in 3 different shops.
You don’t need to be fluent. You just need to be respectful.
Try one today. Just one. And tell me in the comments how the seller reacted. I read every comment.
